Church plans Quran–burning event (by Lauren Russell, July 31, 2010 CNN)
As if there isn’t enough people who hate in the United States, this so-called Christian is not only being hypocritical to his faith but at the same time he’s clearly seeking publicity. Terry Jones, of the Dove World Outreach Center and who is apparently a doctor, posted a video on YouTube where he exclaims in no uncertain terms that Islam is of the Devil and in the above CNN news piece he is urging like-minded believers to burn the Quran. I’m sure that somewhere in the Bible there is a passage that strictly condemns this nonsensical act, however, just like most religions it’s all in how the followers “interpret” the Scriptures. Which by the way, were written thousands of years ago and translated from multiple languages–herein lies the loophole that gives license to anyone with a milk crate to stand upon and spout “the Word” as they see fit.
I pose a question to you: Is the great Dr. Jones beginning to feel threatened by people either turning to Islam and away from Christianity and other religions or even possibly religion altogether? This thought came to mind as I tried to stomach all nearly nine minutes of his diatribe. Not to mention that the picture on the wall depicting Abraham Lincoln and George Washington comforting and consoling George W. as he struggles with the day-to-day challenges as our former president was just too much for my bowels!
I’ll go on the record and say I have serious questions and doubts about the Muslim faith, especially those linked to terrorism who claim that what they do is in the name of the Quran and sanctioned by Allah. Now whether or not that’s true really isn’t the point, is it? I have no doubt there are things in the Bible that we as a society no longer consider civil and therefore end its practice. There’s plenty of Christian history, the Crusades for example or the Catholics and their inquisitions, that are and should be considered abhorrent to a civil society. I know what this so-called “Minister” is doing falls under the First Amendment, yet to me it just seems unwise.
You may now return to your secular events in this godforsaken country (my impression of a wanna be proselytizer.)

Wow. Talk about a hot-button topic. While I disagree with most of what this ‘Doctor’ says, some of his points resonate. What I can’t get past however, is the picture you referred to, with Lincoln and Washington praying with Dubya. Anyone who has a picture like that on his wall is to be pitied and dismissed as a nutjob.

I’m fascinated that my secular friend Jim finds resonance with anything in this “Braveheart” video. Admittedly, I did find myself agreeing with a few points that the great Dr. struggled to make but you of all people know that he is clearly attempting to manipulate viewers in some misguided religious belief. It was apparent to me that the doctor was grasping at the truth, or least what he believed to be the truth, and then he would quote some passages from the Bible or make a reference to Christ when he felt there needed to be a conclusion. Especially when the good doctor says the reason for the “Islam is of the devil” sign was to expose this religion. What garbage! He did it to promote his viewpoint and nothing more. Placing signs on lawns with this vitriol only exposes the religious fanatics that Dr. Jones and all who follow him truly are.

My dear brother, I hope you believe that I speak from the heart as I respond to your post. I viewed the YouTube video with Rick Sanchez that you referenced with Dr. Jones. First, I hope that today’s media representatives will view this as a way NOT to interview someone. Mr. Sanchez did not give Dr. Jones an opportunity to finish a sentence, which to some degree helped him complete the story he wanted. Should Mr. Sanchez be neutral in his journalistic views in order to get the true story? Being the viewer, I must disagree with Dr. Jones belief that burning the Quran would help stop spreading hate. After 911, U.S. citizens wanted Muslims(even moderate Muslims) to explain why anyone not of the Muslim faith be killed. It would seem in attempting to ‘move on’ and forgive we have forgotten the one key ingredient. Hate. I really believe Mr. Sanchez also needs to check his own heart. As for Dr. Jones all christians need to unite on one thought…truth in the Bible. That will never faulter. As for the Quran – it is built on sand and sand is not a solid foundation. The statement that was made in your blog, about Dr. Jones believing Islam is of the devil. Wouldn’t it be easier to hear if instead his statement was “Islam is spreading hate”. Why do I believe this to be….is that stating the “devil” is involved makes it difficult for anyone that does not seek truth through the bible; does not like to have reference to the devil. Since he does exist in this world and as long as we ignore him he will continue to be vigilante in pursuit of our souls. Another question to consider, is it truly hypocritical for Dr. Jones to believe that hate must stop? Understanding his belief has pushed the limits of seeking that truth be heard. So now, how can you justify your statement that Dr. Jones is ‘hypocritical’ in his misguided actions with what you consider to be correct?
. Love you, mean it!
In closing, I must explain that this ‘dolphin and puppy lover’ writes in pursuit of a good discussion with my brother. Never attempting to dismantle his ability to manipulate the right audience.

Alison, I hope you read the article as well as watched the video? I agree that Sanchez did get a bit excited with his questions but that’s not what I find important here. I wrote this blog post because the headline “Church plans Quran-burning event “ really got my attention. I think you answered a very important question in that this action of offending another religion will only increase hatred and misunderstanding. I honestly don’t understand how Dr. Jones feels this in some way is a tribute to those who perished on September 11, 2001. Furthermore, try to remember that you believing there is truth in the Bible doesn’t necessarily mean all share that viewpoint. I’m certain that Muslims as well as Jews could find plenty to disagree with regarding the Bible, understandably so. Also, what is it do you mean when you say the Quran was built on sand? Do you think followers of the Muslim faith would be offended by that statement? When I said that Dr. Jones is a hypocrite I was referring to his action of burning the Quran–which can be viewed by some as a act of hatred, agreed? Honestly, what does “dismantle his ability to manipulate the right audience” mean? You do understand the proselytizing was in jest, right?

I apologize that my response upsets you. This topic regards Christianity and it has been a tough subject, I believe, for you to look at objectively. Why do I say this…because you consistently want fairness to all religions yet, you are never ‘fair’ to my own, which has been proven many times to be truth. While I do not believe other religions…I appreciate everyone’s right to have faith in something. I respect their right to practice their religion. Just please ask yourself a question…why do you think Dr. Jones is a hypocrite….because he is a Christian? Does you not believing in anything make you a hypocrite for being angry? I believe Dr. Jones to be a lot misguided. But then, who these days is not a little misguided and on a mission to prove they are right? BTW, I love you.

I’m only upset that you didn’t answer any of my questions; please try again.

from “the brunette”, hi chris, how u doin? i read your blog and wanted to put in my 2 cents, hope you don’t mind. i get so angry at people like this dr. jones. (i should say that i did not watch the video, so im basing my opinion on your statement and analysis only.) for a christian to suggest that other christians burn the Quran, is dumb at best! how he thinks (that) that would solve anything is beyond comprehension. this kind of “christianity” is scary and makes people that are not christians even less likely to
be interested in finding out more about it.
kelli told me about how angry she became when she saw the 10 commandments, out in the desert as you two were going to “lost wages”. the reason for our anger toward these two issues, is the same; it makes christianity seem ugly and mean. and unfortunately many are. i would ask that you study the life of Jesus, thats the only way to know what we are SUPPOSED to be like. the only people that he had harsh words for were the dr. jones’ of the world. those people that are religous and hurt people with their religion, rather than trying to help them.
